directly to her harshest critics. >>> giving thanks following superstorm sandy. trying to lift the siepirits of those left with nothing. >>> plus this. >>> good morning to you. happy thanksgiving. i'm carol costello. thank you so much for spending at least part of your holiday with us. for the first time in more than a week, it has been a relatively quiet day across israel and fwa gaza. the cease fire is holding. at the border, israeli troops are packing up after spending one final night there. israeli forces says when the cease fire started, three rockets were fired into israel. two hit open areas and the third was intercepted by the iron dome missile defense system. if everything remains this relatively quiet until 2:00 eastern this afternoon, the gaza border crossings will open. rallies opened in the streets as they celebrated what they call a victory over israel. the prime minister says he's dedicated the victory to that man, ahmed al ja'abari, killed in that air strike. as you know, that air strike inciting the fighting. hopeful that the cease fire will hold? >> reporter:

others in new york and new jersey. they're helping areas hit hard by superstorm sandy. >> you ready to do this thing? >> these volunteers are spending the day lending a hand on staten island. volunteers are treating storm victims to a special having day deal. give me an idea what kind of turn out is expected and how grateful i'm sure people there are. >> reporter: there's a sense of emptiness. here is a bit of hope. this is one of the thanksgiving day meals that was prepared within two groups. the liquid church group got together to help the folks in staten island. they got money and supplies. they are helping people gut their homes. they've got fans that are filled with food and wheelbarrows and brushes and rakes. they weren't even thinking about thanksgiving. i want to speak to todd millson. you came out to participate today. >> i think that thanksgiving is day of giving thanks. we can have our thanksgiving any day. these people really need us right now. my wife is here running this block party. we came out to help the people. we're thankful for the opportunity to come out here and do t

. appreciate it. >>> so the rover now from superstorm sandy and what would be an unprecedented move, election officials in storm-wracked new york, they're considering drawing the election past tuesday. interesting. we thought that might happen. voters could get an extra day to cast ballots. it was only common sense, people, that they would have to do something like this. that day would be scheduled as far as 20 days after election day. late yesterday, new jersey chris christie ordered that there be extended voting hours past the weekend. power is slowly being restored. more than 2 million people along the eastern seaboard are still without electricity, 700,000 of those are in new york making for a very cold night with temperatures expected to hover just above freezing. on a positive note, though, new york city public schools will reopen tomorrow. skool schools that were heavily damaged will remain closed, and students in those schools will be assigned temporary locations. some recovery there but still a long way to go. >>> two days before election day. what have the campaigns done right and w

you're going to, i assume, see people who are still suffering the effects of hurricane sandy, which many people say is further evidence of how a warming globe is changing our weather. what specifically do you plan to do in a second term to tackle the issue of climate change and do you think the political will exists in washington to pass legislation that could include some kind of attacks on carbon? >> you know, as you know, mark, we can't attribute any particular weather event to climate change. what we do know is the temperature around the globe is increasing. faster than was predicted even ten years ago. we do know that the arctic ice cap is melting, faster than was predicted even five years ago. we do know that there have been extraordinarily -- there have been an extraordinarily large number of severe weather events here in north america, but also around the globe. and i am a firm believer that climate change is real. that it is impacted by human behavior and carbon emissions. and as a consequence, i think we have got an obligation to future generations to do something about it
